United Way
drive coming at Briggs, please give generously By Scott Godshaw In the next few weeks your fellow Local 7-232 members a Briggs & Stratton will be paying you a visit asking for your donation as solicitors for United Way. I know as well as anyone that not everything is rosy and our insurance premiums have skyrocketed. However, there are people, especially children, that are a lot worse off than we are. It is the responsibility of all in the community to help those less fortunate. I have been a solicitor for many years and I have seen several United Way Agencies. One such agency is the “Center for Blind and Visually Impaired Children”. This Agency presents an early intervention for blind children and their families. To view these children go through exercises with their counselors makes this man’s eyes well up and truly appreciate the gift of vision that I have been blessed with. Your United Way contribution helps to enable this Agency to continue the excellent work they are performing. There are many other United Way Agencies that depend on your contribution. Some of these agencies include Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brother, Big Sisters, The American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin-Health Education Center, Curative Rehabilitation Services, Penfield Children’s Center (Comprehensive Services for Abused and Neglected Children), Salvation Army and Visiting Nurses Association, to name a few. There are also several Runaway Houses and Emergency Shelters that depend solely on your United Way donation to keep them afloat. Where the Money Goes Nearly 100 volunteers, who represent our community, study these local programs and seek local solutions. They identify needs in our community, review funding proposals from non-profit organizations with programs that meet those needs, and examine each program’s record of efficiency and effectiveness. Funding is then approved for individual programs that have specific goals and plans to meet community needs. Funding is being provided in 2000-2001 to health and human service programs operated by about 100 local non-profit organizations.
Therefore, when your Union brother or sister approaches you and asks you
for a United Way donation, don’t look for excuses not to give, but find it in
your heart to discover a reason to give generously. The child that was born
visually impaired is one such reason. I thank you in advance and I am sure the
children would also like to thank you. |
