Remember the Bay View Tragedy

116th Anniversary Commemoration

"Lest we forget the bloodiest labor event in Wisconsin History occurred May 5th 1886. Seven flowering pear trees mark the site near where the state militia fired on workers to demand an eight hour day."

The 116th Anniversary of the 1886 Bay View Tragedy will be commemorated at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2002 at the Bay View Historical Marker Site at S. Superior St. and E. Russell Ave.., about one-half mile from the south end of the Hoan Bridge on Milwaukee’s lakefront.

This annual commemoration has been held annually since May 5th, 1986, which was the 100th anniversary of the incident that occurred on May 5, 1886 when the state militia fired on some 1,500 workers marching for the 8 hour day near the Bay View Rolling Mills, which was then Milwaukee’s largest employer. Seven workers were killed. The workers did not even hear an order to halt prior to the shots being fired by the militia.

The event is hosted each year by a committee of the Wisconsin Labor History Society and Bay View residents.

Sara Rogers, executive vice president of the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO and a Bay View resident, will speak at the event. Rogers heads that labor federation’s political action activities, among other duties. The program will include remarks from from Milwaukee Mayor Frank P. Ziedler, songs from folksinger Larry Penn and the laying of the commemoration wreath. Milwaukee County Labor Council President John Goldstein will be the master or ceremonies.

The event will be free and open to the public.
