Grievance Rep Report

Strattec Security

By Karl Schneider

Brothers and Sisters

I want to congratulate the newly elected Executive Board and the Strattec Bargaining Committee and to encourage the members that were not successful to stay active in their union and support the people that were elected.

DEPT. 90

In dept. 90 the reality of the company's announcement to move molding and notching to Mexico is starting to hit home as some of the machines and equipment are starting to leave. I commend the members that work in this department for their professionalism and attitude in doing their jobs and getting the work done. This is a very difficult time. Also to the stewards that represent membership in this area I thank you for your hard work and dedication to your union.

I am getting a lot of questions about bumping rights, job elimination language, layoff & recall, and transferring. As I reported out at the March membership meeting, the company and the union disagree on the interpretation of "similar work" under job elimination language in the contract. I wrote a policy grievance on 3/18/02 on this subject. It was written because of the 7-day language in the contract. The union and the company have had some discussion on this and we have a meeting with the company set for April 12.

ISO/TS 16949 Audit

ISO/TS 16949 is the standard that is recognized and required too do global business in the automotive industry. The Entela Audit went very well. We had 10 minor non-conformances and we were allowed 20. I want to thank membership for their hard work and congratulate you in making this a success. The importance of this standard is it allows Strattec to compete in a global market. Membership deserves credit because they helped make it happen.

Magnesium Die Cast

The Future of the housing business looks more and more like magnesium. This became a reality when Ford decided that the P221 Housing would be magnesium instead of zinc. Magnesium. Die Casting is a very complex and volatile process. There are 2 types of Magnesium. Die Casting one is Hot Chamber and the other one is Thixotropic Molding. They are 2 very different processes. The company is looking at what is all involved in Magnesium. Die Casting. Does that mean we are going to start Magnesium. Die Casting in the near future? No I do not think so. My point is the company is doing research and exploring what it takes to do Magnesium. Die Casting. I am letting membership know that your Bargaining Committee and I will be working on convincing the company that if they decide to do Magnesium Die Casting the best place to do it will be in Milwaukee at 3333 W. Good Hope Rd.

Stewards

In closing, I would like to thank the stewards that go the extra mile in making our union and the quality of life at work better. You know who you are - thanks!

In Solidarity,

Karl Schneider
