Membership cuts reduce income;
Treasury
decreased $25,444 in year of 2000
by Joe Chambers

Unlike the very healthy 1999, where Local 7-232 saw its
treasury increase by $84,000, the year of 2000 was not a very good year. The
treasury decreased by over $25,000 during 2000.
Membership at Briggs & Stratton was reduced about 10%
during the year. Membership at
Strattec decreased about 4%.
The average number of members on check-off for the year was
2,588. When including double deductions from members in arrears, cash dues
received and dues from Local 7-232 payroll, and deducting for dues refunded to
members, our net dues collected for the year averaged 2,659 members’ dues paid
each month.
Income for Local 7-232 decreased from $1,133,143 to
$1,046,995. (excluding $25,000 transferred from savings accounts) Expenditures
increased from $1,048,389 to $1,072,439. (excluding $3,603.53 transferred to
savings in 2000 and money transferred to savings during 1999)
The three Trustees of Local 7-232 audit the books of the
Local each month, examining all transactions. They also perform an audit of the
Union’s books at the end of each year.
We face added expenditures related to negotiating contracts
at both employers in the current year. This will increase expenses for our
Local. Employment prospects at Briggs & Stratton continue to be very weak
with over 300 members on lay-off and more layoffs scheduled. Strattec had a
briefer period of deep lay-offs earlier this year, but most members are back to
work.
Thanks to the financial recovery we were able to make in
the years prior to 2000, the treasury we have is sufficient to deal with the
current downturn in membership and negotiations.
The Executive Board will continue working to control
expenses. However, with the added expenses of negotiations and dim employment
outlook for the year, I anticipate that Local 7-232 will again have a loss to
the treasury in 2001.
