Model 9 Horizontal Engine production to return to Milwaukee

Briggs & Stratton announced on February 14, 2000 that the Model 9 horizontal engine would be returning to Milwaukee from Auburn, Alabama. This engine has a production run rate of approximately 300,000 engines a year.

The life expectancy of this particular model is at least through fiscal 2007 and possibly beyond. Milwaukee will start assembling this engine on the Red Line starting May 15, 2000 with a run rate of 1,200 a day. At this time there is no replacement engine for this model being built down South and no plans to make such an engine.

Additional machining jobs will be added to the Pilot Area in M-3. The Model 9 heads and covers should be up and running in May. Cranks, blowers and tanks should be back and running sometime after the July shutdown. The total number of jobs returning in relation to the Model 9 will be approximately 100.
