Barrett endorsed by Local 7-232 for Governor

Tom Barrett

Local 7-232 came out strongly in favor of Tom Barrett for Governor after considering the several excellent candidates to oppose Governor Scott McCallum in this November. Earlier this year, membership unanimously voted support for a motion to endorse Barrett. Barrett has been an advocate for working families for ten years as a U.S. Congressman and before that while serving in both the Wisconsin State Assembly and State Senate for eight years.

In his 10 years in Congress, Barrett has earned a 94% lifetime rating from the AFL-CIO. He stood up on behalf of our members in the early 90's to put an end to the practice of having Federal Funds go to help communities attract plants from other parts of the country. He has been a strong advocate for workers rights for a safe workplace, opposing the Republican repeal of the workplace safety rules on repetitive stress injuries.

Barrett fought for trade deals that contain provisions for fair trade, not just protection for corporations and banks. He has opposed the Fast Track legislation that will give the president the authority to negotiate trade treaties with no amendment by Congress. He opposed NAFTA, and opposed the extension of Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China because of its unfair trade practices and human rights abuses.

Barrett introduced legislation to set national rules for a company that seeks to terminate health care benefits for retired workers.

He has also voted to ban the permanent replacement of striking workers. He has supported increases in the minimum wage, and has opposed attempts to undermine the rights of workers to overtime pay.

Earlier this year, Barrett worked hard for legislation to extend Unemployment Compensation for workers. He has been and will continue to be an advocate for workers and their families.

September 10th will be Primary Election Day in Wisconsin. There are excellent candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for governor. We know that we will have a candidate we can clearly support to defeat the incumbent governor in November. Barrett is clearly the best candidate for workers and we encourage members to support him on September 10th.
