Recap of Membership Meetingby Scott GodshawThe membership meetings were held on Thursday January 24, 2002 at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. sharp respectively at the AMF Bowlero. A motion was made under application for membership where a new member from Strattec, Kathryn M. Johnson, was accepted unanimously. Johnson was present and sworn in at the 12:30 meeting. Reports Ross Winklbauer read the Trustee Report at the 12:30 meeting and Colin Campbell read the Trustee Report at the 3:30 meeting. Joe Chambers gave his Financial-Secretary Treasurer for November and December due to not having a meeting in December. He stated there were 1579 dues paying members at Briggs and 454 dues paying members at Strattec for a total of 2033 in November. In December, there were 1603 dues paying members at Briggs and 455 dues paying members at Strattec for a total of 2058. Communications A thank-you letter was read from the Milwaukee County Labor Council for our purchase of 20 solidarity celebration tickets. Also it was announced at the 3:30 meeting that the Milwaukee County Labor Council would be holding a night with the Bucks. $13.00 tickets (regular $25.00) will be available for the Bucks and Cavaliers game on Friday March 8, 2002. United Way of Waukesha County will be holding their annual Union Counselor/Referral Specialist Program - for 6 Mondays beginning February 18th through March 25th 2002 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the United Way Office in Waukesha County, 1717 Paramount Drive. There is no cost. PACE Region X Council will be holding their annual spring conference at the Paper Valley Hotel and Conference Center in Appleton on Saturday and Sunday March 23-24, 2002. Membership approved sending the Executive Board, the Briggs Bargaining Committee and the Strattec Bargaining Committee. The Wisconsin State AFL-CIO will be holding their Community Services and Education Conference March 7-9 at the Racine Marriott Hotel. Membership approved sending Donna Shutic and Kathy Bradd, members of our Community Service Committee. Membership also approved the Executive Board Endorsement of candidates Tom Barrett for Governor, Annie Wacker for 1st School Board District and Joe Dudzik for Alderman 11th District. Reports of Officers President Greg Gorecki reported on the disturbing news from Strattec that 65 jobs will be lost to Mexico. The Union lost an arbitration case where a member from Strattec was discharged for alleged violence on the picket line. At Briggs we received a warn notice. Briggs future is gloomy. The salary people were given 3 additional years to retire and clear out excess salary people. We had a meeting with the Company to discuss the possibility that they would do the same for us. They would look at some numbers. Also we were looking at a plant wide voluntary layoff in order to bring some people back from layoff. Karl Schneider reported on three deaths from the Strattec family. He also reported on the announced job loss at Strattec. Jesse Edwards reported on Dept. 198 wanting to use the 18-month language, group change and the EPO co-pay of $10.00 for primary physician and $20.00 for a specialist. Barb Schuller reported on problems with insurance, updates on production on the south end, the problems in Dept. 797, and Depts.100 & 700 merging and die cast issues. Mike Merrill reported an update on the north end. Under new business, Ernie Dex took nominations for the Strattec Bargaining Committee and the Executive Board (excluding At-large Trustee). The next meeting will be held on February 21, 2002 at the AMF Bowlero. |
