School for Workers Winter 2002 Classes

The School for Workers, UW Extension Continuing Education, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the Milwaukee Labor Movement are sponsoring the classes described below:

Six-week Classes

Steward Training

Fee $34.52

Meets Wednesdays January 30 – March 6, 9:30 a.m. – 12 noon

Topics include the contract, grievance procedure and the role of the steward, rights and responsibilities, what is a grievance, investigating grievances, writing grievances, and presenting grievances to management.

OSHA & Worker’s Compensation

Fee $34.52

Meets Tuesdays January 29 – March 5, 6-8:30 p.m.

This is a class for those interested in learning the law and what unions can do to protect workers in the areas of occupational safety and health and worker’s compensation.

 Two-week Class

Labor History through Film

Fee $13.84

Meets Thursdays February 21 & 28, 6-9:00 p.m.

Using videos and other sources, this class will look at some of the most noteworthy struggles of American workers to improve their conditions. We will examine the impact of economic and political conditions on workers and their union, as well s the role-played by business and government. We will also consider the significance of immigration, and ethnic, religious, racial and gender differences to the evolution of the American working class.

Evening Workshop

Dealing with Difficult People  

Fee $6.95

Meets Monday evening, February 4, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.

Difficult people are a fact of life. Your difficult person might be your supervisor, a fellow union member, or a member of your own family. This workshop will offer practical pointers on dealing with people who make our lives temporarily difficult, and it will offer strategies to deal with chronic hard-core difficult people. If you have “tried everything” with your difficult person, this workshop is for you.

Location:  All classes will be held in the West Assembly Room of the GCIU Building,   633 S. Hawley Road, Milwaukee

 Fee Payment:  Payment by check, payable to MATC, may be mailed with your registration or brought to the first class session.

 Attention! Special Note about Registration Deadlines

Please register early! The registration deadline is 10 days before the start of the class. If by that date the number of registrations does not meet the minimum enrollment required by MATC, the class will be cancelled. Those who have sent in registrations will be notified.
